Context

Infrastructure development plays a pivotal role in driving regional economic growth, especially in remote archipelagic regions of Indonesia. Research has consistently shown that government investments in infrastructure have a multiplier effect, generating employment opportunities and increasing income levels. However, current experiences highlight the persistent issue of inequality in accessing essential infrastructure, particularly in the healthcare sector, which significantly affects local economic development in archipelagic regions.

Numerous challenges in developing infrastructure in remote areas have resurfaced, underscoring the need for solutions that promote equitable regional infrastructure, thereby contributing to the restoration of a sustainable economy. To this end, a comprehensive study focused on infrastructure development in remote archipelagic regions is crucial. By leveraging creativity and innovative ideas, this award is bestowed upon papers aimed at providing recommendations for addressing the issue of regional infrastructure inequality, particularly by enhancing the involvement and coordination between central and regional governments to ensure equitable and high-quality infrastructure in these regions.

The upcoming conference provides an ideal platform for in-depth discussions and the dissemination of innovative solutions and ideas to a broader audience. The special session organized by IRSA and the SMI Institute extends an invitation to scholars to submit papers addressing these critical issues. This session serves as an opportunity to present, discuss, and identify effective strategies to combat regional infrastructure inequality and its implications on achieving sustainable local economic development in archipelagic regions of Indonesia.
